The Canaanites were enemies of the Jews, they had a different faith and practice. This Canaanite woman had heard about Jesus and the miracles he performed. Since her daughter was ill she needed a miracle urgently. The bible gives this account of the Canaanite woman, “But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” And He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she said, “Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
With these harsh words from Jesus one would expect her to be offended and allow her feelings to defeat her. Imagine your reaction to these words! Giving up might have been your first option. Instead she persevered because she knew that Jesus was her only option. The Lord Jesus was so surprised by her faith that he blessed her immediately.
As women we can be very “sentimental creatures.” One minute we are in the faith …….shortly after everything falls apart. Why? Simple, we allow our emotions to extinguish our faith. How many persons have allowed theirself to be taken out of the faith because of little things? Perhaps we were rebuked or even treated in an impolite manner. These occurences were enough to cause us to miss our blessings.
As women we need to practice living by faith. We need to be resistant against anything that threatens to take our attention from our Lord Jesus Christ. In the words of the Caribbean people we need to have a “duck’s back.” What do I mean? If criticisms, harsh words, insults etc are like water of a duck’s back to us, then they will not affect us at all. Nothing affects the back of a duck!
