It all started in the suburbs of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Edir Macedo – who was a young pastor at the time – began to hold meetings with nothing but a keyboard, a microphone and a Bible. Every Saturday the meetings were held at a bandstand in Garden of Méier on the northern side of Rio de Janeiro. These were the very first steps of the Universal Church of the Kingdom Of God (UCKG).
Macedo’s passion was to reach out to needy, less privileged people who were often excluded by established religions. As Pastor Macedo’s services grew in popularity, he used cinemas and local halls to accommodate growing congregations, attracting people from the streets to the expanding movement. Shortly after, on the 9th of July 1977 the doors of the Universal Church were officially opened inside a funeral parlour, which was discovered by Albino da Silva, a member of the church.
As the church grew rapidly, Edir Macedo gathered all the branches in Rio de Janeiro for a couple of occasions. The most popular at the time being in the Maracanãzinho stadium.
As time went by, more than 5,000 UCKG churches in Brazil were opened, with the headquarters at the time being in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1980 the first International branch was opened in Mount Vermont, New York. This was only the beginning as branches in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Miami, Los Angeles and many other US cities were soon to follow.
Today in Europe, it is established in England, Portugal, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Switzerland and Poland. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the UCKG opened its doors in Germany. The end of communism enabled the church to provide churches for Russian and Romanian people.
The first Universal Church in Africa opened in Angola in 1992. It is now active in South Africa, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Kenya, Lesotho, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Uganda and many other countries on the continent. In Asia, the UCKG is established in India, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan.
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God is currently active in over 190 countries. The UCKG is present in more countries than Popular franchises such as McDonald’s (125), KFC (118), Nike (120), Adidas (69), Apple (39) and many others.
The first activity of the UCKG in Trinidad & Tobago happened in 1999. The first communion was held at the Pascal’s family home and after only 2 months the first church was officially opened in a building located at upper Henry St.
People from all across the country began to hear about the church on a daily basis. In 2006 the first Trinidadian, Pastor Nigel Campbell, was raised in the ministry and has since joined the battle to win souls and change lives in T&T.
After being in various areas of Port of Spain the Universal Church is now located near the city’s main transportation station ( City Gate). Today the UCKG can be located in 15 different branches throughout Trinidad and Tobago where 5 to 6 services are held per day, 7 days a week, every day of the month, throughout the entire year.
